Jeju is an island, not a city, and that changes how you pick a base. The airport sits in Jeju City on the north coast, the resort hotels are in Jungmun on the south coast, and Seongsan's sunrise peak is out on the east tip. From the airport, the far bases are about an hour or more by car, and longer by bus.

Here are the six areas most visitors choose, compared on the same terms. Bus routes, fares and timetables come from the Jeju bus information system run by Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, cross-checked with Korea Airports Corporation's Jeju Airport page. Drive times are from a Kakao Map route search. Everything was checked on October 19, 2026.

1. Jeju City — the easy base

A Jeju City street with low buildings and Hallasan in the distance

The airport is inside Jeju City. Yeon-dong and Nohyeong, the newer part of town just south of the runway, have the most hotels, restaurants and bus routes on the island. The old downtown around Dongmun Market is on the other side of the airport.

  • From the airport: Sinjeju Rotary in Yeon-dong is 2.5 km from the airport on the official bus fare table, and Kakao Map puts Nohyeong five-way junction about 8 minutes away by car. City buses cost ₩1,150 with a transit card and leave from gates 2 and 5.
  • Getting around: the express buses to the west, south and east coasts in this guide all start at the airport or Jeju Bus Terminal, so day trips by bus are simplest from here.
  • Watch out for: it's a city, not a beach town. You'll ride a bus or drive to the coast.
Jeju City
Pros
  • Closest to the airport, good for late arrivals and early flights
  • The most buses on the island
  • Plenty of restaurants open in the evening
Cons
  • No beach on your doorstep
  • City streets rather than sea views

2. Aewol — cafés on the west coast

Cafés along a rocky shoreline at sunset in Aewol

Aewol is the stretch of coast west of Jeju City, known for sea-view cafés and the Handam coastal walk. It's popular with people who rent a car and want sunsets without being far from the airport.

  • From the airport: express bus 102 reaches Aewol in about 35 minutes (₩2,000 by card), every 25–55 minutes. By car it's about 30 minutes.
  • Watch out for: places are spread along the coast road. Without a car, check how far your hotel is from a bus stop on the 102 route.

3. Hallim and Hyeopjae — the beach

Hyeopjae Beach, next to Hallim Park on the west coast, is the base for people who want to swim and walk on the sand.

  • From the airport: take bus 102 to Hallim (about 51 minutes, ₩2,400 by card), then bus 202, which stops at Hyeopjae Beach and runs every 15–25 minutes. By car it's about 46 minutes.
  • Watch out for: evenings are quiet, and it's a long ride to the east coast.

4. Jungmun — resort hotels

A resort hotel garden above the sea in Jungmun

Jungmun is a planned tourist complex on the south coast, lined with large resort hotels and close to the Jusangjeolli basalt cliffs. If you want a pool, a sea-view room and as little planning as possible, this is it.

  • From the airport: airport limousine 600 stops at the Jungmun resort hotels. It leaves from gate 5 at Jeju Airport, first bus 06:30 and last 22:20, about every 50 minutes. Fares go by distance, from ₩1,300 to ₩5,500; Jungmun's hotels and ICC Jeju are ₩4,500. On the timetable it takes about 55 minutes to Yeomiji Botanical Garden and 70 minutes to ICC Jeju. A sister route, 601, runs between the 600s (06:00–21:02) and goes into the grounds of the Lotte, Shilla and Suites hotels.
  • By car: about 48 minutes.
  • Watch out for: outside the hotels there isn't much of a town. Restaurants are spread out, so most people drive or take taxis at night.
Jungmun
Pros
  • Airport limousine to the hotel door
  • Big resort hotels with pools
  • Close to Seogwipo's waterfalls
Cons
  • Little street life after dark
  • Hard to explore the east without a car

5. Seogwipo city — the south coast without a car

Seogwipo is Jeju's second city. The center around Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market is small and walkable, with Cheonjiyeon and Jeongbang waterfalls nearby.

  • From the airport: express bus 182 (gate 4) runs over the Pyeonghwa-ro road to Jungmun in about 55 minutes, Seogwipo Bus Terminal (World Cup Stadium) in about 70 and the central rotary in about 90, every 30–60 minutes, ₩3,000 by card. Limousine 600 also continues to the Seogwipo KAL Hotel (₩5,500), about 1 hour 45 minutes on the timetable.
  • By car: about 1 hour 10 minutes to the Olle Market.
  • Watch out for: it's a long trip back for an early flight. Leave plenty of time.

6. Seongsan — sunrise and Udo

Small boats in Seongsan harbor with the crater behind

Seongsan sits on the east tip of the island, under Seongsan Ilchulbong, the crater that people climb for sunrise. It's also where ferries leave for Udo Island.

  • From the airport: express bus 111 goes from gate 1 to Seongsan Port Passenger Terminal in about 85 minutes (₩3,000 by card), every 40–77 minutes, last bus 21:30.
  • By car: about 1 hour 10 minutes.
  • Watch out for: it's the furthest of the six from the airport. Staying one night here is enough for most people — it saves a very early start for sunrise.

Getting from Jeju Airport

Buses leave from numbered gates outside the arrivals hall. All Jeju buses are now cashless: Korea Airports Corporation lists "no cash since July 2024" on every route, so have a transit card ready.

Times are worked out from the Jeju bus information system's timetables (first morning bus from the airport) and will be longer in traffic. Fares are from the official fare tables. Express-bus fares go by distance, from ₩2,000 to ₩3,000 by card. Gate numbers are from Korea Airports Corporation.

  1. Get a transit cardA T-money card works on Jeju buses. Visit Jeju recommends one, and it gives you free transfers. See our Korea transit card guide.
  2. Find your gateFollow the bus signs outside arrivals: gate 1 for the east coast, gate 2 for the west coast, gate 4 for Seogwipo via Pyeonghwa-ro, gate 5 for limousine 600 and city buses.
  3. Tap on and offTap your card when you get off too. Visit Jeju says you get up to two free transfers within 40 minutes, but not when you get back on the same route number.

Flying in from Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong or Singapore? Jeju Airport's summer 2026 schedule lists direct flights from Tokyo Narita, Osaka Kansai, Fukuoka, Taipei Taoyuan, Kaohsiung, Taichung, Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore. Check with the airline for the winter schedule, which starts in late October.

Without a car, or with one?

Without a car, Jeju works if you pick bases on the bus lines: Jeju City for the first and last nights, then Seogwipo or Jungmun for the south coast. Express buses link the airport with every base in this guide. Outside the city and away from the big sights, Visit Jeju warns that waits can reach an hour or more, so check the timetable before you head out.

With a car, you can stay anywhere, and the west coast (Aewol, Hyeopjae) makes more sense. The rental-car shuttles leave from a stop outside gate 5: cross the road in front of gates 3 or 5 and follow the "Rental car house" signs.

Driving in Korea as a foreign visitor

  • You need an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1949 Geneva or 1968 Vienna convention, or under an agreement between Korea and your country. That's Korea's Road Traffic Act, Article 96.
  • It's valid for one year from the day you enter Korea, and the law lets IDP holders drive rental cars.
  • Taiwan: Taiwan's Highway Bureau lists Taiwanese IDPs as usable in Korea (its table updated September 2026).
  • Bring your home licence and passport too. Visit Jeju also lists a credit card and a minimum age of 21. Each rental company sets its own rules on age and driving experience, so check before you book.
  • Korea drives on the right — worth remembering if you drive on the left at home (UK, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Malaysia).

Taxis aren't cheap over long distances. Jeju's official mid-size taxi fare starts at ₩4,300 for the first 2 km, with a 20% night surcharge from 23:00 to 04:00 and a higher per-distance rate after 20 km. For the south and east coasts, the bus or a rental car usually makes more sense.

Entering Korea through Jeju

Jeju has its own visa-free rule, so check which case you're in:

  • If your passport normally needs a visa for Korea, you can still enter Jeju without one for up to 30 days, if you arrive on a direct international flight or ship to Jeju. You must stay on Jeju; the permit doesn't cover the mainland. Nationals of 23 countries are excluded. This comes from Korea's official visa portal (visa.go.kr), which lists the countries.
  • If your passport is already visa-free for Korea (for example the US, UK, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong or Singapore), the normal visa-free rules apply and you can travel on to the mainland.
  • K-ETA: the official K-ETA FAQ says you need a K-ETA to visit Jeju too, unless you're exempt. A temporary exemption for some countries, including the US, runs until December 31, 2026. When you scan your passport on the official K-ETA site (k-eta.go.kr), a pop-up tells you whether you're exempt. Travellers aged 17 or under or 65 or over don't need one.

Typhoon season

The Korea Meteorological Administration's records show about three typhoons a year affecting Korea, most often in August, then July and September. Those three months account for 90% of them. If you travel then, book flexible rates — ferries and flights can be cancelled in bad weather.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a car in Jeju?

No, but it changes where you should stay. Without a car, stay on the bus lines: Jeju City, Seogwipo or Jungmun, all linked to the airport by express or limousine buses. With a car, the west coast (Aewol, Hyeopjae) is easy to reach.

Where should I stay in Jeju for the first time?

Jeju City for the first night or two, because it's minutes from the airport and every express bus starts there. Then move to the south coast (Seogwipo or Jungmun) for the waterfalls and resort hotels.

How do I get from Jeju Airport to Jungmun?

Take airport limousine 600 from gate 5 (₩4,500 by card to the Jungmun hotels, about 55–70 minutes, first bus 06:30, last 22:20). Express bus 182 from gate 4 stops in Jungmun town for ₩3,000. By car it's about 48 minutes.

Can I use T-money on Jeju buses?

Yes. Visit Jeju recommends a T-money card, and transfers are free within 40 minutes, up to twice. Jeju buses no longer take cash.

Can foreigners drive in Jeju?

Yes, with an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva or 1968 Vienna convention, or under an agreement with Korea, plus your home licence. It's valid for one year from your entry into Korea. Taiwan's Highway Bureau lists Taiwanese IDPs as accepted in Korea.

Can I visit Jeju without a visa?

If your passport needs a visa for Korea, you can enter Jeju visa-free for up to 30 days on a direct international flight or ship, except nationals of 23 listed countries, and you must stay on Jeju. Check K-ETA separately on k-eta.go.kr.
