Busan stretches along the coast, so where you stay changes your trip more than in Seoul. The beaches (Haeundae, Gwangalli) are on the east side, while the old port, markets and KTX station (Nampo, Busan Station) are on the west — about 45–50 minutes apart by subway.
Here are the five areas most first-timers choose, compared on the same terms. Subway times come from Busan Transportation Corporation's route search (cross-checked with Kakao Map), airport details from Korea Airports Corporation and the Busan–Gimhae Light Rail, and hotel prices from a Trip.com search — all checked on October 18, 2026.

*Green marks the lowest of the five. Median of the first 15 three-diamond hotels (non-ads, within 1 km) on Trip.com for Thursday, November 12, 2026, two adults, taxes included. The order of results shifts during the day and prices move with it — treat these as a rough guide. Subway times are Busan Transportation Corporation's route-search results, cross-checked with Kakao Map for a weekday noon departure. They shift by a few minutes with the timetable and can run about 5 minutes longer late in the evening.
1. Haeundae — for the beach

Haeundae is the Busan most people picture: a long city beach backed by towers, with the hotels right on the sand. In 2026 the beach was open for swimming until September 15.
- From the airport: the airport limousine bus to Haeundae and Gijang costs ₩9,500 (card only, no cash), first bus 07:10, last 21:40, from stop 3 outside both terminals. By light rail and subway, it's about 55–60 minutes with one change at Sasang.
- Getting around: Line 2 at Haeundae Station. Gwangalli is 12 minutes, Seomyeon 30. Osiria (the resort area with theme parks) is 20 minutes via the Donghae Line from BEXCO.
- Watch out for: it's the furthest of the five from Busan Station (about 45 minutes) and the old town (about 50). Outside the official season (Haeundae-gu lists September 1 to May 31), swimming is banned from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise.

- The beach is right outside
- Biggest choice of sea-view hotels
- Airport bus stops along the beach
- Far from Busan Station and Nampo
- Hotel prices among the highest of the five
2. Gwangalli — bridge views for less

Gwangalli Beach faces Gwangan Bridge, which lights up at night. The beachfront is lined with cafés and bars, and in our price check it was the cheapest of the five areas.
- Fireworks: the 21st Busan Fireworks Festival is on Saturday, November 7, 2026, around Gwangalli Beach, Igidae and Dongbaekseom. Expect rooms near the beach to go quickly for that night, so book early if you want to stay here.
- Getting around: Line 2 at Gwangan or Geumnyeonsan Station. Haeundae is 12 minutes, Seomyeon 18.
- From the airport: light rail and subway, about 45–50 minutes.

3. Seomyeon — the central base
Seomyeon is Busan's downtown: shopping streets, underground malls and food alleys, and the only station where subway Lines 1 and 2 meet. That makes it the easiest base for a short trip that covers both sides of the city.
- From the airport: the airport limousine to Seomyeon and Bujeon costs ₩6,000 (card only), roughly every 70–80 minutes, first bus 07:20 and last 21:30. By light rail plus subway it's about 25–30 minutes, changing at Sasang.
- Getting around: Busan Station 10 minutes, Nampo 14, Gwangalli 18, Haeundae 30.
- Watch out for: no sea. You'll ride the subway to every beach.
4. Nampo and Jagalchi — markets and the old town

Nampo is Busan's old downtown around the port: Jagalchi fish market, BIFF Square, Gukje Market and Busan Tower in Yongdusan Park. Gamcheon Culture Village, the colorful hillside neighborhood, is close by.
- Getting around: Line 1 at Nampo or Jagalchi. Busan Station is 4 minutes, Seomyeon 14. Haeundae takes about 50 minutes with a change.
- From the airport: light rail plus subway, about 45–55 minutes with two changes.

- Markets and street food on the doorstep
- 4 minutes to Busan Station
- Easy trip to Gamcheon Culture Village
- About 50 minutes to Haeundae
- Quiet after the markets close
5. Busan Station — for KTX and early starts
Busan Station is where KTX trains from Seoul arrive. It isn't a sightseeing area, but it's practical if you're coming by train or doing day trips.
- Getting around: Line 1. Nampo 4 minutes, Seomyeon 10, Haeundae about 45 with a change.
- From the airport: about 40–50 minutes by light rail and subway, with two changes. There's no airport limousine to Busan Station on the airport's current list.
- Worth knowing: hotel prices here came out highest in our check, and there were only about 20 three-diamond options.
Day trips from your base

- Gamcheon Culture Village: closest from Nampo.
- Haedong Yonggungsa: the seaside temple is on the east side, closest from Haeundae and Osiria.
- Osiria / Gijang: resorts and theme parks, 20 minutes from Haeundae via BEXCO on the Donghae Line. The Haeundae airport limousine continues to Gijang, though not at every hour.

Getting from Gimhae Airport
Gimhae Airport doesn't have a direct subway. You ride the Busan–Gimhae Light Rail to Sasang (6–7 minutes) and change to Line 2. With a transit card, transfers within 30 minutes are free and you pay the higher fare only.
| From the airport → | Option | Time | Adult fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seomyeon / Bujeon | Airport limousine | Not published | ₩6,000 (card only) |
| Haeundae / Gijang | Airport limousine | Not published | ₩9,500 (card only) |
| Seomyeon | Light rail + Line 2 | 25–30 min | ₩1,600–1,800 |
| Busan Station | Light rail + Lines 2, 1 | 40–50 min | ₩1,600–1,800 |
| Gwangalli | Light rail + Line 2 | 45–50 min | ₩1,600–1,800 |
| Haeundae | Light rail + Line 2 | 55–60 min | ₩1,600–1,800 |
Limousine buses leave from stop 3 on the first floor of both the domestic and international terminals. Rail times are ranges from Busan Transportation Corporation's route search and Kakao Map (weekday, around noon); the higher figure includes the walk between platforms at Sasang (about 7 minutes on Kakao Map) and waiting for the next train. Fares assume a transit card: within 30 minutes you pay only the higher of the two fares.
- Get a transit cardA T-money card works on the light rail, Busan subway and buses. See our Korea transit card guide.
- Light rail to SasangFollow signs for the Busan–Gimhae Light Rail at the airport. Sasang is 6–7 minutes away.
- Change to the subwayAt Sasang, switch to Line 2 for Seomyeon, Gwangalli and Haeundae; change again at Seomyeon for Line 1 to Busan Station and Nampo.
Flying in from Japan, Taiwan or Hong Kong? Gimhae Airport's summer 2026 schedule lists direct flights from Tokyo Narita, Osaka Kansai, Fukuoka, Taipei Taoyuan, Kaohsiung and Hong Kong, so you can skip Seoul entirely. Check with the airline for the winter schedule from October 25.
Getting around Busan
- Subway fare: ₩1,600 up to 10 km, ₩1,800 beyond, with a transit card.
- Busan subway day pass: ₩6,000 in the official app, subway only (not buses, the Donghae Line or the light rail).
- Visit Busan Pass: for foreign visitors, ₩55,000 for 24 hours or ₩85,000 for 48 hours with free entry to listed attractions. Only the physical card works as a transit card.
