Seoul is big, but for a first trip the choice comes down to five areas. They all sit on the subway, so you can't really go wrong — the difference is how much time you spend riding trains, and what's outside your door at 11pm.
Here's the short version, then each area in detail. Airport fares and hotel prices were checked on October 11, 2026 on the official AREX and airport limousine sites and on Booking.com. Subway times are KakaoMap's suggested routes, station to station, checked the same day.
The short answer

| Myeongdong | First trip, shopping, street food | Limousine bus 6001 / 6015, ₩17,000 | 10 / – / 32 min | about ₩260,000 |
| Jongno / Insadong | Palaces, hanok lanes, quieter nights | AREX to Seoul Station + subway | 7 / 9 / 29 min | about ₩189,000 |
| Hongdae | Nightlife, cafés, tighter budget | AREX all-stop train, direct | 21 / 22 / 40 min | about ₩119,000 |

*Median of the first 15 three-star results on Booking.com for one night on Thursday, November 12, 2026, two adults, taxes included. Weekends and holidays run higher. Prices change daily — treat these as a rough guide, not a quote. Subway times are station to station on KakaoMap's first suggested route; add a few minutes for walking and waiting.
1. Myeongdong — the easy first choice

If you only remember one name, make it Myeongdong. It's the shopping and street-food district in the middle of the city: skincare shops on every corner, food stalls from late afternoon, and Namdaemun Market a short walk away.
- From the airport: limousine buses 6001 and 6015 stop around Myeongdong Station for ₩17,000 per adult (₩12,000 per child). Pay with a transit card or cash; seats are first come, first served and can't be booked online. Or take AREX to Seoul Station and ride subway Line 4 two stops.
- Getting around: Line 4 at Myeongdong, Line 2 at Euljiro 1-ga. Gyeongbokgung Station is about 10 minutes away with one change at Chungmuro.
- Watch out for: it's crowded and loud in the evening, and the cheapest rooms here aren't cheap — on our sample night, 3-star rooms ran from about ₩87,000 to over ₩420,000.
2. Jongno and Insadong — palaces on foot

Jongno is the old heart of Seoul. Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces, Bukchon's hanok lanes, Insadong's tea houses and the tiny alleys of Ikseon-dong (right outside Jongno 3-ga Station, exit 4) are all close together. Time Out even named Jongno 3-ga one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world for 2026.
- From the airport: AREX to Seoul Station, then subway Line 1 to Jongno 3-ga or Jonggak. Limousine 6005 also runs to City Hall.
- Getting around: Jongno 3-ga connects Lines 1, 3 and 5. Gyeongbokgung Station is 2 stops, about 7 minutes; Myeongdong about 9 minutes.
- Watch out for: it gets quiet after dark compared with Myeongdong or Hongdae. Hanok guesthouses in Bukchon sit on hills and often have no elevator — worth checking if you're bringing a big suitcase.
3. Hongdae — nightlife and value

Hongdae is the university area: buskers, indie live music, late bars and cafés everywhere. It was the best-value area in our price check — the median 3-star room was around ₩119,000, less than half of Myeongdong.
- From the airport: this is the big one. The AREX all-stop train stops at Hongik University Station, so there's no transfer. With a transit card it's ₩4,650 from Terminal 1 and ₩5,250 from Terminal 2. KakaoMap puts the ride to Terminal 1 at about 52 minutes.
- Getting around: Line 2, AREX and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line all meet at Hongik Univ. Station. Gyeongbokgung is about 21 minutes away, Myeongdong 22, and Gangnam 40 on Line 2 with no change.
- Watch out for: streets stay noisy until late, so ask for a room away from the main road if you sleep lightly.
4. Gangnam — modern Seoul

Gangnam, south of the river, is wide avenues, glass towers, COEX Mall and a lot of skin clinics. It suits business trips and travelers who want big, newer hotels.
- From the airport: limousine buses run to Gangnam and COEX (routes 6703 and 6020). We couldn't confirm their current fares on an official page, so check at the bus counter. The late-night N6000 to Express Bus Terminal costs ₩17,000.
- Getting around: Line 2 and the Shinbundang Line at Gangnam Station. Gyeongbokgung is about 29 minutes away and Myeongdong about 32 — fine for one day, tiring for five.
- Watch out for: Gangnam is far from the old city. Most first-timers spend more time north of the river.
5. Seoul Station — for early flights and day trips
Seoul Station isn't a sightseeing area, but it's the most practical base in the city. It's the only stop of the AREX express train: non-stop to Incheon in 43 minutes (Terminal 1) or 51 minutes (Terminal 2) for ₩13,000. It's also where KTX trains leave for Busan and Gyeongju.
- Getting around: Lines 1 and 4. Myeongdong is two stops, about 4 minutes; Gyeongbokgung about 13 minutes.
- Best for: a 7am flight home, or a trip that mixes Seoul with a KTX day trip.
What about Seongsu and Itaewon?
Both are great to visit, less so to sleep in on a first trip.
- Seongsu is the café, gallery and pop-up-store district next to Seoul Forest. On our sample night, Booking.com showed only a handful of 3-star properties — mostly apartments and guesthouses — and there's no direct airport train.
- Itaewon has the most international food scene in Seoul and plenty of English. The main strip gets loud on Friday and Saturday nights. The easiest airport route is AREX to Gongdeok, then Line 6.
Spend an afternoon in either, and stay in one of the five above.
Getting from Incheon Airport

| Option | Goes to | Time | Adult fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| AREX express | Seoul Station only | 43 min (T1) / 51 min (T2) | ₩13,000 |
| AREX all-stop | Hongik Univ., Gongdeok, Seoul Station and more | 59 / 66 min to Seoul Station | ₩4,650–5,350 (transit card) |
| Limousine 6001 / 6015 | Myeongdong area | Not listed officially | ₩17,000 |
| Night bus N6000 | Express Bus Terminal (Gangnam) | — | ₩17,000 |
The single-journey AREX ticket costs ₩100 more than the card fare, plus a refundable ₩500 deposit. Times for limousine buses aren't published on the operator's site and depend heavily on traffic.
Before you go: 5 quick checks
- K-ETA: the temporary K-ETA exemption has been extended to December 31, 2026 for eligible countries. If your trip runs into January 2027, check k-eta.go.kr — only apply on the official site or app (₩10,000).
- Transit card: Seoul's Climate Card short-term pass covers subways and city buses for 1–7 days (₩5,000 for 1 day up to ₩20,000 for 7 days). It doesn't cover the Shinbundang Line or airport buses. A regular T-money card works everywhere.
- Maps: download Naver Map or KakaoMap. Google Maps' walking and driving directions in Korea have long been limited — check whether that has changed before your trip.
- Tax refund: many shops take the VAT off at the till on purchases from ₩15,000 to under ₩1,000,000. Bring your physical passport.
- Plugs: Korea uses 220V / 60Hz with two round pins (Types C and F).
Getting connected
An eSIM is the easiest way to have data from the moment you land: install it at home, switch it on after landing. We compared Airalo, Saily and the Korean carriers' own eSIMs — prices, data limits and when a Korean phone number is worth it: Korea eSIM for travelers (2026).
