Renting a hanbok for a few hours is one of the most popular things to do in Seoul, and it comes with a real perk: visitors wearing hanbok get into the royal palaces for free. The catch is that the palace office has written rules about what counts as hanbok, and not every rental outfit qualifies.
Below are five rental shops near the palaces, compared on price, what's included and opening hours, followed by the official free-entry rules. Shop details come from each shop's Creatrip booking page; palace rules, hours and fees come from the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center (Korea Heritage Service). Everything was checked on October 18, 2026.

Prices are Creatrip's displayed USD prices on October 18, 2026 (they move with the exchange rate and promotions). Ratings combine Creatrip and Google reviews as shown on each page. Daehan Hanbok's hours are from its page's hours box; its booking text says 09:00–19:00, so book a morning or early-afternoon slot to be safe. Haewadal's page says it is closed on Tuesdays except April–June, while an older hours box shows Tuesday 09:30–18:00 — check before a Tuesday visit.
Which shop should you pick?

First time, want it easy — YES Hanbok. It's the best-reviewed of the big shops by Gyeongbokgung, with over 1,000 outfits, free hair styling and a storage locker for your bags. A 4-hour rental is $22.48, and booking 2 or 4 hours adds an extra hour.
On a budget — In Korea Hanbok or Daehan Hanbok. In Korea Hanbok includes hair styling from $10.11 and asks for no deposit or ID. Daehan Hanbok starts at $6.74 with more than 1,500 outfits and no deposit, but makeup and photos aren't included, and returning late costs ₩2,000 per 10 minutes.
Want a drama-style look or an evening visit — Yeinbang Hanbok. It's near Changgyeonggung and Changdeokgung rather than Gyeongbokgung, rents more elaborate outfits, includes shoes, socks and a hat, and stays open until 9pm. Changgyeonggung is open until 9pm too (last entry 8pm). Two things to know: the shop confirms bookings within 1–2 business days rather than instantly, and arriving more than 10 minutes late cancels your booking.
Shops change prices with promotions and the exchange rate, and some charge extra on site for shoes, hats or warm vests (YES Hanbok lists ₩5,000 each). Check what's included on the booking page before you go.
What reviewers say
We read about 50–60 recent and low-rated Creatrip reviews for each of the four big Gyeongbokgung shops (all 26 for Daehan Hanbok, which has few on Creatrip itself), and checked their Naver Place pages (all four addresses match).
- YES Hanbok: staff help match skirt and jacket colors, and the shop is right by the station exit. The main complaint is crowding at busy times — a few reviewers, mostly in 2023, queued about 20 minutes to change. Several said the first 9am slot was quick.
- In Korea Hanbok: free hair styling is the most-praised part. Men have fewer outfits, no braiding or bag, and a hat costs ₩5,000 extra. One reviewer arrived to find it shut — it's closed on Tuesdays.
- Daehan Hanbok: easy to find and has large sizes, but reviewers repeatedly mention crowds in the morning and at weekends (one Saturday visit took 1.5 hours).
- Haewadal Hanbok: makeup and hair packages get good marks, but around 8 of the reviews we read mention extra charges or sales pitches on site. If you book "hanbok only", you can politely decline.
The free-entry rules

Free admission for visitors in hanbok is written into the palace office's own viewing regulations, and its official Q&A confirms it applies to foreign visitors in the same way.
Where it applies: Seoul's four palaces (Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung), Jongmyo Shrine and the Joseon royal tombs.
What counts as hanbok: - Both a top and a bottom. A jeogori (the wrap-front jacket) with a skirt or trousers. Traditional and modern "daily-wear" hanbok both qualify. - Not enough: a jeogori with jeans, hanbok trousers with a T-shirt, a T-shirt-style "daily hanbok" top, a one-piece hanbok dress without a jeogori, or a durumagi (long overcoat) worn over regular clothes. - Skirts and ties: any skirt style is fine, and how the jacket ties doesn't matter as long as it keeps the wrap-front collar. - The rules ask for outfits that suit the palace setting — avoid anything overly revealing.
Most rental shops near the palaces dress you in a set that qualifies, but "fusion" outfits vary. If you pick something unusual, check that it has a separate jeogori.
Korean media reported on October 8, 2026 that the palace office plans to review the hanbok free-entry policy this month. No change has been announced — check the Royal Palaces website before your visit.
Palace hours, closing days and fees
| Palace | Closed | Hours (Oct / Nov) | Adult fee without hanbok |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gyeongbokgung | Tuesdays | 09:00–18:00 / 09:00–17:00 | ₩3,000 |
| Changdeokgung | Mondays | 09:00–18:00 / 09:00–17:30 | ₩3,000 (Secret Garden ₩5,000 extra) |
| Changgyeonggung | Mondays | 09:00–21:00 all year | ₩1,000 |
| Deoksugung | Mondays | 09:00–21:00 all year | ₩1,000 |
| Jongmyo | Tuesdays | Self-guided on weekends, holidays and Wednesdays; guided tours only on Mon, Thu, Fri | ₩1,000 |
Last entry is one hour before closing. If a closing day falls on a public holiday, the palace opens and closes the next non-holiday instead. Foreign visitors aged 18 and under or 65 and over enter free anyway, and every Wednesday ("Culture Day") is free for everyone at all of these except Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung's Secret Garden.

- Royal guard changing ceremony: at Gyeongbokgung, at 10:00 and 14:00, about 20 minutes each. The palace is closed on Tuesdays, so plan your visit for another day.
- Personal photos are free. Shoots in non-everyday costumes (character outfits, mascot suits and the like) and commercial filming need a separate permit.
- Not allowed inside: alcohol, picnic mats, tents, pets and smoking.

- Changgyeonggung's lantern event at Chundangji pond runs until November 1 (reservations needed). Its regular evening opening pauses from November 10 to 15.

Frequently asked questions
Is entry to Gyeongbokgung really free if I wear hanbok?
Yes. Visitors wearing hanbok get free entry to Seoul's four palaces, Jongmyo and the royal tombs under the palace office's regulations, and foreign visitors are included. The outfit must have a jeogori (top) plus a skirt or trousers.
Does a fusion or modern hanbok count?
Modern "daily-wear" hanbok counts. What matters is the shape: a wrap-front top worn with a skirt or trousers. A one-piece dress without a jeogori, a T-shirt-style top, or a jeogori with jeans doesn't qualify.
Which palace is closed on Tuesday?
Gyeongbokgung and Jongmyo close on Tuesdays. Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung and Deoksugung close on Mondays.
How much does hanbok rental cost in Seoul?
On Creatrip on October 18, 2026, 2-hour rentals near Gyeongbokgung started from about $6–19, depending on the shop and outfit. Drama-style outfits cost more (from about $66 at Yeinbang Hanbok).
When is the guard changing ceremony at Gyeongbokgung?
At 10:00 and 14:00, about 20 minutes each, according to the palace office. The palace itself is closed on Tuesdays.
